Frequently Asked Questions

Skin naturally sheds dead cells, but the process slows down with age, dryness, and sun exposure. Exfoliating helps clear away that buildup so skin looks smoother and brighter and pores look clearer. Done gently and regularly, it is one of the easiest ways to improve dull, rough-looking skin. The key is to choose a gentle formula and avoid overdoing it.
AHAs, such as glycolic and lactic acid, are water-soluble and work on the surface to smooth texture and brighten. BHA, also known as salicylic acid, is oil-soluble and works inside pores, which makes it popular for oily and congested skin. PHAs have larger molecules that work more slowly, so they are a gentler option for sensitive skin. Many exfoliating formulas combine two or more of these acids for balanced, all-around care.
Oily and blemish-prone skin often does well with BHA or exfoliating serums that also balance sebum. Dry or dull skin benefits from AHA formulas with added hydration. Sensitive skin is usually most comfortable with PHA or low-strength, rice-based exfoliants. Whatever you choose, start slowly and increase only as your skin adjusts. Combination skin can also use different exfoliants on different areas, such as BHA on the T-zone and a gentler formula on the cheeks.
Most people prefer to exfoliate at night, since freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun and night gives it time to recover. Very gentle daily exfoliants can be used in the morning too, as long as you follow with sunscreen. Avoid using several strong exfoliants in the same routine. Spacing different exfoliants across the week helps your skin stay comfortable.
Follow exfoliation with hydrating and soothing products that help support the skin barrier, such as a toner, a serum with hyaluronic acid or PDRN, and a moisturizer with ceramides or panthenol. Skip other strong actives like retinoids on the same night. In the morning, apply sunscreen to protect the fresh surface. Soothing gel or hydrogel masks are another good option on exfoliation nights.
Exfoliating sprays, serums, and body washes with gentle acids loosen dead skin without the need for grains or brushes. Some sprays are applied to dry skin, rubbed in gently, and rinsed off with water, while leave-on formulas stay on, so follow the directions for each product. Sprays are especially handy for hard-to-reach areas like the back and shoulders. Finish with a body cream to keep skin soft.
